I am indebted to William Allen's grandaughter, Karen Kebby, and William's wife ,
Constance, for the photographs and to Karen for writing the following tribute to
her grandfather:
William Allen, known as Darby or Bill loved the
sea and despite the trauma he suffered when the Dunedin went down he was keen to
get back to sea. He served both on the Howe and Devonshire. He married his war
time sweetheart, had three children, twin daughters and a son and lived to the
age of 75. His family are honoured that he is included on this web site, the
great courage he showed remained with him throughout his life, he was kind,
considerate, funny and his family are so very proud of him.
