To all members of the Dunedin Society

This year's Remembrance Service, marking the 70th Anniversary of the sinking of HMS Dunedin, will take place on Thursday 24th November at 1315 hrs in front of the Portsmouth Naval War Memorial, Southsea Common. The Order of Service will be distributed on arrival at the Memorial.

Following the service we will be holding an informal get together in the Nelson Room of the Royal Maritime Club, Queen Street, Portsmouth Hampshire PO1 3HS (see below for contact information)

Hot lunch/sandwiches may be pre-ordered from the Compass café menu on the morning of the service; this will help to speed things up upon our return. Tea and coffee will be available, as well as a full bar. Lunch will be available at 2.00 pm in the Nelson room, which we have booked specifically for our event.

Please advise Karen Kebby of your intention to attend and whether you will require evening meal, by Monday 31st of October, either via email or Royal Mail (Churchview Joinery, Unit 3, 27 Brook Road, Wimborne, Dorset, BH21 2BH) or telephone: 01202 848752 (day time week days only - please be brief as it is her business number). Read on for the details.

Afternoon Programme

Viewing Artefacts

It has been some time since we last displayed memorabilia relating to the Dunedin and her ship's company; the 70th Anniversary gives us an opportunity to do so again. For some members of the Society this will be their first sighting of these articles. After lunch we invite you to browse our collection. Chris Broadway, who is the custodian of the collection will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the items on display.

Should you have any mementos which you feel you would like to share with others we would be pleased to provide space for you to do so. Please ensure they are clearly labelled with your information so that they do not get mislaid.

Video & Photographs

You will have seen on the Website that in July of this year some of our members visited Plymouth.

We will be showing pictures and commentary of their visit taken whilst they toured HM Dockyard and the Committal of the ashes of Bertie Jeffreys at sea.

There will be an opportunity to relax, chat or rest before the three-course evening meal, which will be served in the restaurant at 7.00 pm. A bar is available to purchase drinks.

Should you wish to stay at the RMC please call their advance booking line on: 02392 837681.

Further information can be found at: www.royalmaritimeclub.co.uk If you are staying at the RMC then the rate for room, breakfast and a three-course dinner in the evening would be £55.00 per person sharing and £56.50 in a single room (please mention HMS Dunedin when booking as this is the members' rate).

We have been advised that rates may drop a little with it being the winter season. You are required to book and pay for your own accommodation and food. If you would like to just come for the day and stay for the evening meal the cost would be £15.75 per person.

Alternative accommodation for you to consider if you do not wish to stay at the RMC:

Premier Inn 0871 527 9014
Queens hotel 023 9282 2466
Ibis Hotel 023 9264 0000
Travelodge 0871 984 6208
Hilton 023 922 19111

Car parking is limited at the RMC and is usually reserved for those who find mobility difficult. If you need to reserve a space please phone the RMC the day before to see if they have any available. Car parking for the able-bodied is available directly across the road from the RMC (however please note that this car park closes at 19.00). You may also get half your ticket price back through the RMC for this car park. There is 24 hour car parking available in the roads around the club by ticket from the RMC (free for the 1st 2 hours); apply in reception.

Please note there will also be a small Memorial Service at the HMS Dunedin plinth, situated in the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffordshire: www.nationalmemorialarboretum.org.

The service at the Arboretum will be conducted and very kindly organised by Bas Bower on the 24th November at 13.15hrs followed by wreath laying  and planting crosses. Dunedin members from the Midlands are cordially invited to attend. Order of Service will be distributed at the Service. A get-together over lunch at the Visitor Centre will take place following the Service.

Kind regards
