On this page you will find a collection of photographs of one or more members of the ship's company. We can identify only a very few of the men. If you recognise anyone (or you are one of the men yourself), let me know. Keep checking back because I will add to this collection over time. Remember, click on a thumbnail for a larger image. This photo was taken in 1939 and is titled "Conscripts". The group were in Skegness at a Butlins holiday camp, which had been converted into a training camp. A number of Rhodesians were members of Dunedin's ship's company, some of whom are in this picture. One of them, RP Shinn, has signed the back. This photo was originally supplied by Jim Knight, whose father, JH Knight, was later a member of Dunedin's ship's company. JH Knight and RP Shinn are, we assume, in this picture, but we don't know where. Can you identify anyone? Jim Davis (a later survivor of the sinking) is on the left end of the third row.

Group picture, added February 2008 On the right, below, is Les Rowett, Dunedin's canteen manager, but can anyone identify the other two people?
Picnic in Jamaica Crossing the Line
Two scenes from the 'Crossing the Line' ceremony as Dunedin crossed the equator on 28th April 1941 (see more below). On deck in Freetown. Jim Davis is middle row, far right. The Hannover prize crew (Hannover was the German merchant ship captured in the Caribbean in March 1940). Harry Cross is seated, to the left of the man with the swastika. Officers on deck. Royal Marines at (and in) a football match. Sgt Allen is back right in the team picture. Possibly the last (and only?) group photo of Dunedin's Royal Marines, taken some time after January 1941. We (ie Bill Gill) can identify the following: Allen, Pacey, Macaulay, Peacock, Maul, Garthwaite, Bracey, Meakin, King, Hall, Dunkley, Rose, Laurence, Sunter. The two Naval officers are (left) Captain Lovatt and (right) Commander Unwin. Two soaked Royal Marines on the Atlantic crossing, February 1940. This was taken when Dunedin took prisoners on board from the German merchant ship Heidelberg (which scuttled before it could be captured) in March 1940. The prisoners are the ones being guarded by three Marines and a sailor. Tombola on deck the same day. Royal Marine gun crew. Do you know the man on the left? On the right is Stoker Sydney Ellis. The picture was taken in Bermuda in the summer of 1940. Another picture taken about the same time in Bermuda. Sydney Ellis is centre standing.
(Standing back row, second from the right, is - probably - Thomas W. Hall, RNVR) Crossing the Line 28th April 1941
