A handful of Members of the Dunedin Society gathered at the National Memorial Arboretum on 30th October 2004 to commemorate the addition of the survivors' plate to the Dunedin Memorial plinth. In overcast and damp conditions a brief ceremony took place at 1400 at the Dunedin plinth. Our thanks go to Bas Bowyer for once again arranging a fitting and well executed ceremony in memory of the men of HMS Dunedin.

This completed the story on the plinth, on which there is already a brief history of HMS Dunedin and a full list of those who died serving in Dunedin during the Second World War.

The new plate lists those who survived the sinking so that the memorial will carry the names of every soul who was on board HMS Dunedin on that fatal day in 1941.

After a brief lunch in the Arboretum café, the group assembled at the white ensign area where the ensign was lowered to half mast. The congregation then moved to the Dunedin plinth where a ceremony was conducted by the Rev Trevor Grewcock. Jim Cross, brother of Harry Cross (one of the survivors who died earlier this year) read the Exhortation and the President of the Dunedin Society read the Kohima Epitaph. After the release of five doves of peace, the congregation returned to the white ensign area where the flag was full masted.
