Sidney Joseph Ellis, Stoker 1^st class, P/SS 123999, was born in Halstead Essex on November 26^th, 1900.  He was the son of Joseph Ellis, a carter, and his wife Sarah, née Wicker. He worked as an engineer’s labourer before enlisting in the Navy in 1918. In 1922, he married Alice Mary Eastes, with whom he had three children. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in 1923, and served in HMS Dunedin from August 23^rd, 1939.
