Biographical Notes
Edward Rowland Hewett, Chief Petty Officer Cook (P/L 11989), was born in Exmouth, Devon on October 31st 1902. He was one of several children of Alfred Hewett, a cab driver and coachman, and his wife, Ada, née Dunstan. In 1929, he married Rose Phyllis Cole, with whom he had two children.
He worked as a kitchen porter before enlisting in the Royal Navy in 1919. He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1935. He joined HMS Dunedin on 29 July, 1939.
He survived the sinking of HMS Dunedin but died on one of the Carley rafts.
