Harold Edward John Gane, Chief Petty Officer Steward (P/L 12028) was born in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, on July 1st , 1902. He was the son of Henry Charles Dore, who worked in the rubber industry, and his wife Anne Maria, née Dore. In 1931, Harold married Dorothy Emily Dolman. The couple had one daughter.

On his service record, his civilian occupation is given as “rubber worker”. He joined the Royal Navy in 1919 and the ships on which he served included HMS Hood. He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1935. He joined HMS Dunedin on December 2nd, 1938.
