Ordnance Artificer Bernard Armstrong was born in 1919, the only child of Bernard Benjamin Armstrong, a farmer and prominent Methodist, and Ada Armstrong (nee Fairbanks) of Boston, Lincolnshire. He studied engineering at Boston Technical College and joined the Royal Navy in 1939. He was engaged and had arranged to marry his fiancée, a civil servant from Portsmouth, at Christmas 1941.
