Charles John Hay, E.R.A. 4th Class (P/MX 70427), was born in East Chevington, a coastal mining village in Northumberland, on May 6th 1920. He was the son of Charles John Hay, a coal miner, and his wife Jane Laing Hay, née Scott. At the outbreak of the War, he was an engineer’s apprentice, living in Morpeth with his mother and sister.
