James Henry Gray, Stoker 1st class RFR (P/K 46973) was born on March 28th 1899 in Darlington. He was the son of James Gray, a steel worker, and his wife Alice, née Gent. In 1919, he married Alice Maud Tarrant, née Gent, with whom he had two daughters.

James Gray’s occupation on enlisting was given as “forge hammerman”. He began his training during the First World War, on November 9th, 1917, serving continuously until 1938.  He was called on to serve again as a second war approached, having entered the Royal Fleet Reserve in 1937. He joined HMS Dunedin on August 22nd, 1939.
