John William Harvey, Stoker 1st Class (P/SS 121518), was born on May 4th 1901 in Canford, Dorset. He was the first child of Thomas Harvey, a police constable, and his wife, Edith Emily, née Richardson. He enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1919, and joined HMS Dunedin on August 23rd, 1939. In 1927, he married Margaret Downer, with whom he had two sons.
