Piers Avard Hayward, Able Seaman (P/JX 169610), was born on April 21st 1919 in Ryde, Isle of Wight, the son of Ernest Joseph Hayward and his wife Vera Melita, née Avard. In 1939, he was a printer’s apprentice, living with his widowed mother and sister in Reading.
