Sidney Charles Hurst, Chief Petty Officer Stoker (P/K 60882), was born on May 13th 1900, in Bristol. He was one of several children of John Howard Hurst, a general dealer and his wife Annie, née Fairclough. In 1923, Sidney married Ada Florence Cooper, with whom he had a daughter.
Before he entered the Royal Navy in 1918 as a short service stoker, he was an ironmonger’s assistant. His naval career included two periods in Malta. He joined HMS Dunedin on November 4th 1937. He held the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
