Biographical Notes
Garonwy David Lewis Harcombe, B.Sc., Temporary Instructor Lt., was born in Porth, Glamorgan in 1916, the first son of Mathew Harcombe, who at the time of Garonwy’s birth was working for a mining company, and his wife, Mary Catherine, née Lewis. The couple had three children: Goronwy, Cledwyn, who as an RAF flight engineer on a Halifax bomber was killed over the Netherlands in 1943, and Gwenda, who after the war became a doctor. Garonwy Harcombe’s appointment as Temporary Instructor, Lt. dated from September 10th, 1939. According to the records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission he was married to Helen Marie T. Lewis Harcombe. Garonwy Harcombe died on the rafts, and his date of death is given as November 27th , 1941.
